The farm comes to Wold Academy

On Friday we were delighted to have the Purple Pig Farm at Wold Academy.  Rachel the farmer brought a calf, lambs, piglets, chicks and rabbits and set up the farm on the field.  All of the foundation stage and key stage 1 managed to visit the farm and experienced handling, feeding and stroking the animals.  Lots of our parents managed to come along too.  What a fantastic end to the Spring term.

Easter bonnet parade and crafts

Foundation 2 had a super Spring time morning last week with an Easter bonnet parade followed by a craft session. Once again we had amazing support from our parents and grandparents with a hall full of families working together.  As always, we would like to say a big thank you for your support and wish you all a very happy Easter.

Mystery visitors in F2

The F2 team would like to say a very big thank you to the parents who have volunteered to be one of our mystery visitors. The children are always surprised and delighted when someone else comes to talk to them or share a story.  It can be a bit daunting to do this but the children gain so much from it. If you are interested in being a mystery visitor please speak to one of the team but don't tell the children!

Baking for the Lord Mayor - congratulations

Mrs Rothery's cookery club were asked to take part in a competition - baking for the Lord Mayor. The children made their buns or cakes on Monday lunchtime and decorated them on Monday night. The skills the children showed were amazing and the finished products were fantastic! It was lovely to spend the time with such committed and  enthusiastic children.

The children gathered together on Wednesday and went off to the City Hall were their cakes were arranged on display. After a tense time waiting for the judges to announce their decisions, the children found out that they had come third. Very impressive as they were not only up against other primary schools but some of the local colleges as well!

A massive congratulations to all - the cakes and buns were truly first class!

Prickly Hedgehogs and Awesome Owls

Year 2 have had an amazing 3 weeks.
During the first week we had a visit from the Hull Hedgehog hospital. They came and talked to us about what hedgehogs are like, what they eat and what dangers they face. The children were so quiet we were able to get a very good look at the hedgehog that had been brought in.

The second week, saw us all going on a night walk. Lots of our parents brought us back to school where we were greeted with hot chocolate and biscuits. After gobbling these down, we walked around the school field, including the nature area and then we moved down to the fields at the end of Wold Road. We heard and saw several birds including a moorhen near the school pond. Some of us were lucky enough to see a hedgehog and some bats but, sadly, there were no foxes out and about. We would like to thank all the parents who supported our night walk.

On this our final week, we were visited by owls from the Wolds Way Owl Trust. Again the children behaved perfectly and were able to have brilliant views of Sandy the barn owl and Edward the European Eagle Owl. The Wolds Way Owl trust are based at South Cave Falconry, Rudston Walk, South Cave. The centre is open on Thursdays to Sunday with flying displays at 1pm - it would be a brilliant place to visit during the Easter holiday! I have included the link to their website below.

Eco day in F1

The children in F1 made a compost pit for Eco day. We learnt about recycling our food waste and over a long time it turning into compost. We will be having compost monitors in F1 who will take the food waste bin from our snack area to the compost pit outside.

The children also started to make an insect hotel, this is a home for all the insects that visit our outdoor area. The children drew their own designs for the insect hotel.

F1 Easter activity day with parents

In F1 we had an Easter activity day with families.
Children and families made yummy chocolate Easter nests, painted eggs and made Easter bonnets. It was a lovely day and we had lots of families joining us.
There was also some great feedback from the session, so thanks to those of you who handed in your comment slips.

Winter Cup Champions

Congratulations to our fantastic netball and football team who won the DRET Winter Cup. This was an outstanding achievement and we are all extremely proud of the children's success. They were a credit to the school, showing positive attitudes and were great ambassadors.

Youth Parliament

Wold was represented at the Children and Youth Parliament meeting at the Guildhall in Hull today.  We debated different issues and went into the Hull City Council Chambers.  It was interesting to see how the city is run and decisions are made.

Wold's World Book Day

Wow! That is the way I have to start this blog because what a fabulous day we are having. As I am sure your children have told you, each class has decorated their door as the cover of a book and they are fabulous. The children and staff have put an amazing amount of effort into them and I am currently awaiting one of our Hull librarians who is coming to judge them ... I am very glad I don't have to do it as I just couldn't choose! The winners will be announced in our assemblies tomorrow and we will announce them on the big screen. Pictures of the doors will also be put onto our big screens and DRET will be putting them on the website.
We would also like to thank all of you for the costumes you have supplied for your children - I don't think we have ever had such good costumes. The support you give us is fantastic. Thank you also for the donations of money, we raised £410  for the Motor Neurone Association, which will be used to support people with Motor Neurones and their families to cope with this very debilitating and distressing illness.
