Elf on the shelf

This afternoon we had such an exciting time.  Mrs Charlesworth came to visit to say she had been working in her office and heard some jingling bells.  When she came out to look there was no one around but she just saw something whoosh through the sky!  3 parcels had been left and were labelled F2G, F2W and F2D.  Mrs Charlesworth delivered these parcels to the classes.

When we unwrapped them we had each been sent an elf from the North Pole.  The elves use Christmas magic to travel back to the North Pole each night and report to Santa on how the F2 children at Wold Academy are getting on.

We were so excited and couldn't believe we have elves visiting us!  We need to remember not to touch the elf as it can affect its magical powers if we do.  The elf story book said the elf will play a game each day by hiding somewhere different every morning and our job is to look for it and find it.  We have been thinking of names for the elves and looking forward to showing them how well we can behave and how kind we are to each other.  This is sure to make Santa Claus feel happy and proud!

Another successful Maths Fair!

Well done to all the children who took over the 'teaching' at Wold Academy during the Maths Fair at parents evening. The children did a wonderful job of teaching all our parents and carers the calculation methods we use in our school. We also sold lots of support materials. These materials/books are still available, so please just pop in to school if you would like to purchase any more of these valuable support resources.

Foundation 2 enjoyed a wonderful visit to Sewerby Hall this week.  The children were able to explore the park, meet the animals in the zoo and look at the beautiful walled garden and monkey puzzle trees.  The bus journey was also exciting and everyone enjoyed their packed lunches (as soon as we got off the bus).  Thank you for helping to finance this valuable trip, the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

Year 1 Relay Racing

The children in Year 1 had a very exciting day on 11th June 2014. As part of our activities to mark the visit of the Queen's Commonwealth baton, the children took part in some relay racing themselves!

Queen's Baton Come To Wold

Introduction

Well Wednesday was the day of glory for Wold Academy, the baton finally came.

We all cheered and screamed as the baton entered our school. The beautiful baton was extrodinary, it was so big that everybody WOWED! It will be a day we will never forget!

The Best Day Ever

As the Tag Rugby players took to the field, the camera crew began to film. After the long rugby game, the Commonwealth dancers and cheerleaders performed their routine on Wold Trafford. As their music blared out of the speakers, year 4 performed outstanding glockenspiel pieces, to then drink refreshing smoothies made by Mrs Rothery and a group of helpers. Their stalls also gave out scrumptious fruit kerbabs and delicious fruit salads. The entire school enjoyed the day.

The Baton, that was as remarkable as a chest of treasure, glisened frantically! There was lots of screaming and shouting going on but still it was a day to remember.

Buses in F2

We have had such an exciting week in F2.  We have been doing lots of work about buses, including looking at bus timetables, making our own buses, reading a great book called Naughty Bus, buying and selling bus tickets for various prices and singing different songs about buses.  We also found out that Finley's Grandad is a bus driver so we thought of lots of good questions about buses and emailed him.  On Monday we will be finding out the answers to our questions.

On Friday we had a very exciting visit from Stagecoach buses.  They brought a real double decker bus and parked it up at school.  We were all allowed to climb aboard and try out the different seats.  We looked through the windows from upstairs and downstairs and compared the views.  Some of us asked the drivers questions and we all sang "The wheels on the bus" whilst sitting the bus.  One of the drivers even beeped the horn during "The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep".

We have had so much fun learning about buses and our teachers feel very proud of the work we have done.  I wonder which form of transport we will be learning about next!

Sandcastle Investigations in Year Two

Year Two are studying all things to do with the seaside. We decided it would be great fun to make sandcastles and investigate the best mixture of sand and water. We started with no water in the sand, then one teaspoon, two teaspoons and so on. Each of us had a job to do....it was very interesting! Can you spot which was the best sandcastle?

Foundation 2 mud kitchen

One Saturday all the teachers from FS went on a course to learn about cooking in a mud kitchen.  Then with the children we made our own mud kitchen.  The children decided where in our garden the mud kitchen should be and what sorts of things they would like included in it.  The children also thought about how to be safe in their mud kitchen and agreed they would wear waterproof clothing and wellington boots when working in this area.

The children helped to prepare the area and spread bark chips on the ground then collected the furniture and decided where they wanted it to be placed.  They then got to work and began preparing their recipes and mud food!  Some of the most popular creations were soups, potions, sausages, pancakes with snails and worms!  They are very happy because  when working with mud,  a chemical reaction occurs, the body produces serotonin which makes you happy.

The children have taken great ownership of their mud kitchen and it is their responsibility to wash up and tidy the mud kitchen at the end of the day.  Washing up is very popular and the children have enjoyed using the scrubbing brushes. It is also an important part of the play as whilst restoring calm and order in the kitchen they are also restoring calm within themselves.
